Montgomery County Officials Move Opposite Federal Government, Double Down on DEI Office Expansion

As the federal government continues its push against DEI initiatives, Montgomery County officials are expanding the county’s DEI office.

As President Donald Trump’s administration continues its push against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Montgomery County officials are taking the opposite stance by expanding the county’s DEI office, writes Katie Bernard for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Until now, the Montgomery County Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion had just one employee, but last month, the county’s board of commissioners approved hiring four new staff members. The vote passed along party lines.

According to county officials, the expansion is a “transformative investment” that will reinforce Montgomery County’s commitment to inclusion.

The county established the DEI office four years ago. The DEI chief, Donna Richemond, worked with county departments to make sure they employ a diverse workforce, maintain a culture of inclusion and equity, facilitate training, and integrate DEI into county operations.

Democratic Commissioners Jamila Winder and Neil Makhija emphasized that expanding the office is crucial to strengthening and sustaining the county’s ongoing efforts in this area.

“This added capacity will allow us to deepen our impact and expand programs that make Montgomery County a better place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Winder.

The new roles include two chief deputy officers, an administrative assistant, and a director of immigrant affairs.
