Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) was recently recognized in EdTech magazine for taking a proactive approach to student mental health with its innovative Wellness Center at the Pottstown campus. Recognizing the growing need for accessible support, MCCC has integrated technology and physical resources to create a space where students can relax, recharge, and seek help.
The center, which opened in 2022, features a sensory room equipped with soothing lights, massage chairs, and semi-private seating areas designed for decompression. Students can also access virtual therapy in dedicated counseling rooms, where automated lighting and background noise provide a sense of privacy. Additionally, a peer support program allows students to connect remotely via Zoom, eliminating barriers for those who may not be able to travel between campuses.
Wellness Center Director Nichole Kang emphasizes the importance of these resources, particularly for MCCC’s large commuter student population. Many students, including those facing housing instability, rely on the center as a safe and welcoming space.
With no on-campus housing and many students balancing work, family, and academics, MCCC’s Wellness Center is more than just a facility but also a lifeline for students navigating the challenges of higher education.
