Doylestown Destination Finds Spot Among Pennsylvania’s 22 Quirkiest Museums

Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle in Doylestown has secured a spot on the list of twenty-two of the quirkiest museums in Pennsylvania.

One local Bucks County museum has earned a place on the list of Pennsylvania’s 22 quirkiest museums, offering a great way to spend a fun afternoon, writes Kalena Thomhave for The Keystone.

Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle in Doylestown showcase the life’s work of Henry Mercer, the eccentric archaeologist and tilemaker who passed away in 1930.

The museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, is a six-story, concrete castle designed by Mercer to showcase his collection of around 17,000 objects representing everyday life in the pre-industrial age. It is also home to a research library.

Meanwhile, Fonthill Castle was his home and a place to showcase his collection of decorative Moravian tiles and art prints. Today, the 44-room castle offers a window into Mercer’s unique architectural and artistic vision.
