Former Lower Merion Superintendent Resigns as PA Education Secretary
Pennsylvania’s education secretary, Khalid Mumin, who previously served as Lower Merion School District superintendent, is stepping down, write Maddie Hanna and Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
On Friday, Mumin announced he would be leaving his position in two weeks, notifying his colleagues that “effective December 7, I will transition into a new role outside of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.”
Mumin will be working for the Goldie Hawn Foundation as chief of strategy and education partnerships and global development. The foundation supplies schools with MindUP, a social and emotional learning program.
Gov. Josh Shapiro said Angela Fitterer, the department’s executive secretary, would serve as interim acting secretary.
“Dr. Mumin has dedicated his life and career to ensuring Pennsylvania children have real opportunity through a quality education that sets them up for success in life,” said Shapiro. “He has led the Pennsylvania Department of Education with passion and integrity. I am grateful for his service to Pennsylvania’s students and educators and wish him great success in his future endeavors.”
He added that during his time leading the department, Pennsylvania made historic investments in K-12 public education.
Mumin said that serving as Pennsylvania’s education secretary was “the honor of a lifetime.”
