After public meetings and hundreds of surveys, Upper Gwynedd nears final stages of development of plans for their parks and recreation.

Upper Gwynedd Township is in the final stages of developing a comprehensive parks and recreation plan, set to shape the community for decades, writes Dan Sokil for The Reporter.

The draft plan emerged from extensive public engagement, including seven public meetings and over 500 survey responses. Consultant Peter Simone highlighted the plan’s focus areas: planning studies, park upgrades, and recreational facilities.

A priority is the Nor-Gwyn pool complex, vital to the community but nearing the end of its lifespan. Similarly, the aging castle-shaped Park-Sci playground is due for evaluation, encouraging community participation reminiscent of its original construction.

The plan advocates for a modest recreation building to address the shortage of indoor recreational space. Other proposed improvements include enhanced trails, ballfield restoration, additional restrooms, and sustainable landscaping. The draft also suggests formal agreements for the Nor-Gwyn baseball complex and identifies potential open space acquisitions.

Residents have expressed concerns about the plan’s necessity, cost, and the inclusion of non-township properties. Some suggest broader outreach methods to capture more community feedback.

Public feedback on the draft is invited via the township’s website before a committee review on November 7, with a formal presentation scheduled for December 4.
