It was the final game of the season for the Unified Basketball League, where inclusivity is the name of the game, writes Chris O’Connell for Fox 29.
The last game at Strath Haven High School between Strath Haven and Marple Newtown Unified Basketball teams had packed bleachers, screaming cheerleaders, and a roster of players where all abilities were welcome.
The league of Delaware County schools has inclusivity as its main goal when organizing the middle school and high school teams.
“Neuro typical and neuro diverse kids just getting out there and playing together having fun,” said Nicole Bottino, mother of sophomore player Dominque, who is also on Strath Haven’s cheerleading team.
For many of the athletes, the league has become a big part of their social life outside the classroom, generating friendships they may not see in school.
“That level of inclusivity, to bring them into a varsity basketball environment with fans and the national anthem and the excitement, it’s just entirely wonderful,” said Strath Haven Unified Basketball Coach Kevin Haney.
“To watch your kids join a team and get the ball and be able to shoot. It tears us up every time,” says mother Lix Chiliberti, of Marple Newtown.
