The Philadelphia Flyers started their season 1-5-1 with the team not earning its first regulation win until their eighth game.
However, after shaking off the abysmal start and cleaning up some of their issues, the Flyers have gone 4-2-1 in their next seven games, writes Kevin Kurz for The Athletic.
The team is also riding its first three-point streak of the season.
The turnaround can first be credited, in large part, to the team’s defense.
Since allowing a league-worst 4.44 goals-per game through October 28, the Flyers have tightened up in their last seven games. At 2.43 per game during that seven-game stretch, the Flyers rank fifth-best in the NHL.
“Last year, we had our identity and we did that consistently pretty much every single game and we knew how we had to play,” said Flyers’ defenseman Nick Seeler. “I think the start of the season, we kind of lost that. That past week or so, I think we’ve found that, and been getting back to it.”
The Flyers have also gone a perfect 17-for-17 on penalty kills over the last seven games, and are second in the league this season at 90.4 percent.
Goaltender Samuel Ersson is a big part of that equation, as his .977 save percentage is the league’s highest.
