Bridget Tarnowski of Glenside ran the New York City Marathon on November 3 to raise funds for 261 Fearless, Inc., a global non-profit organization that empowers women through running, writes Ryan Genova for Glenside Local.
Tarnowski ran her first New York City Marathon after completing her inaugural marathon in Philadelphia last year. She is a research scientist at Merck in West Point and former Division I rower at UNC-Chapel Hill. She rediscovered her passion for distance running after moving to Glenside in 2021.
“261 Fearless is the perfect match for me for New York City,” Tarnowski said. “Its founding by an accomplished female runner is deeply tied to its goal to help educate women about health, physical activity and leadership.”
261 Fearless was founded in 2015 by CEO Edith Zuschmann and Kathrine Switzer. Switzer was the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967.
The organization now has 19 clubs with over 50 groups in 14 countries, supported by more than 200 certified coaches.
“We aren’t about speed,” said Zuschmann. “We’re about need: the need for all women to feel empowered through discovery of their own inner strength through being physically active.”
Tarnowski’s run symbolizes this mission, helping to foster a global community where women support and inspire each other.
