Ultra-marathoner and Abington native, Will Swenson, will compete in five Ultra Challenge races this year to raise funds for the New England Innocence Project, writes Dave Dyer for Eagle Tribune.

Swenson, an experienced long distance runner, is hoping to help the organization that fights for prisoners who have been unjustly convicted and imprisoned. He was first introduced to the Innocence Project by his wife, Karen, who works as a public defender.

However, he really become involved and passionate about the project after befriending Victor Rosario, a man who spent over three decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. Swenson said that there are numerous other prisoners in similar a situation, which is why he wants to help out in the best way he knows how, by running very long distances.

“I’ve seen how hard these people work defending people who should not be in prison,” he said. “Raising money for them is important because they can’t do the work without funds.”

To raise support, Swenson has started a fundraiser page where he has already managed to generate over $3,500 towards his target of $5,000.

“I like to compete and do well, especially since I’m dedicating my year to this,“ said Swenson.
