Tim and Tracy Panella turned a 1920 Abington home into a personal haven with abundant interior space as well as a three-story back deck, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The couple fell in love with the home as soon as they saw it six years ago.
“From the outside, the house looked like a small cottage, but it had these massive rooms inside,” said Tim. “It was deceptive from the street.”
The couple knew they would have to do some renovations, but could not wait to get started.
Among the interior changes, they repurposed the playroom into a dining room and converted the former dining room into an office space.
The biggest exterior change they made was replacing a decaying two-story wooden deck with a three-story composite deck.
The deck’s top floor features a firepit amid a large orange and wicker sectional couch. One flight down is a landing leading to a utility closet with the water hookup and planting and koi pond supplies. Meanwhile on the bottom floor is a pergola.
“We wanted additional living space,” said Tim. “It feels like a tree house when the trees are full and the waterfall is running in the pond.”
