St. Joseph’s Field Hockey Continues Impressive Season with Win Against Virginia

Sixth ranked St. Joseph’s field hockey team lost to UMass in overtime, but the Hawks have already recovered.

After being ranked sixth, the highest in program history, St. Joseph’s field hockey team lost to UMass in overtime earlier this month, but the Hawks have already recovered, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The team, which slipped to No. 8 following the loss, managed to beat No. 3 Virginia 5-2 on Sunday.

However the team was eager to play again.

“We had a really good week of practice after that loss, just refocusing them and just getting them on the same page and seeing areas we could improve,” said head coach Hannah Prince. “I think it shows that they are resilient and hungry for always achieving.”

The win against Virginia was especially sweet, since the Cavaliers were the ones to knock the Hawks out of the NCAA Tournament last season in the first round.

One of the Hawks’ leading scorers since 2022 has been fifth-year forward Lily Santi, who also managed to shake the net on Sunday.

“Obviously, I’m forward, I love to score goals, but at the same time, I think we just really connected as a team together, and it just flowed,” she said.
