A Pickleball Boom Leads Harleysville Entrepreneurs to Launch Indoor Centers

Harleysville’s Jim and Mia Cassidy partner with Dill Dinkers to expand the sport of Pickleball into the area with indoor centers.

Jim Cassady, a 55-year-old entrepreneur from Harleysville, recently transitioned from a 30-year career in the pharmaceutical industry to launch a new venture in the world of pickleball, reports John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Feeling burned out from corporate life, Cassady wanted to find a fresh direction. He and his wife, Mia, who is a certified occupational therapist assistant, became passionate about pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong.

Their journey into this sport started seven years ago when they bought affordable paddles and took lessons at local courts. As they began to explore the game more seriously, they quickly encountered a significant challenge: the lack of accessible indoor facilities during colder weather. This challenge inspired Cassady, who enjoys crafting business plans, to explore the idea of opening indoor pickleball centers.

After leaving his role in digital marketing at Bristol Myers Squibb, he discovered franchise opportunities with Dill Dinkers, a Maryland-based chain. Although initially interested in a single franchise, discussions led to the chance to become regional developers for Delaware County and northern Delaware. This region encompasses all of Delaware County and areas north of Route 40 in Delaware, including Wilmington and Newark.

The Cassadys aim to open 10 indoor pickleball centers in the next six years, starting with their first location in Delaware. The centers will offer various activities, including open play, clinics, and private lessons, along with a pro shop for equipment sales. With pickleball’s popularity—nearly 48.3 million Americans played in the past year—the Cassadys are poised to tap into this growing market, contributing to a wave of new indoor facilities in the Philadelphia region.
