Lower Gwynedd Township uses grant money from the Montco 2040 Implementation Grant Program to erect a bridge of Penllyn Creek for pedestrians.

Lower Gwynedd Township celebrated the completion of a new pedestrian bridge over Penllyn Creek with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Sept. 30, reports Rachel Ravina for The Times Herald.

The bridge, located at the intersection of Bethlehem Pike and Locust Lane, is part of a series of pedestrian safety improvements in the area.

The project was funded by the Montco 2040 Implementation Grant Program, with over $278,667 allocated through multiple grants in 2020 and 2022. Montgomery County Commissioner Tom DiBello expressed excitement about the initiative, emphasizing the importance of enhancing safety and accessibility in the community.

The upgrades included two pedestrian bridges, new sidewalks, curb installations, and ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Officials highlighted the necessity of these improvements along Bethlehem Pike, a busy roadway connecting schools, businesses, and residential areas.

Prior to the project, pedestrians had to walk dangerously close to traffic, which DiBello noted was a serious safety concern. The improvements now provide a safer environment for the community.

In addition to the completed work, Lower Gwynedd Township received a $250,000 grant from the Montco 2040 program for 2024. This funding will extend a trail connecting the Penllyn Train Station to Pen-Ambler Park and Ambler Yards, further improving local infrastructure.
