Karen Chung of Chester Springs has received one of the nation’s first treatments for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease, write Yukare Nakayama and Cherise Lynch for NBC10 Philadelphia.

Chung, 63, is getting care at Abington Neurological Associates. She just received her first dose of Kisunla, an intravenous drug that removes amyloid plaque and extreme build-up of the amyloid protein in the brain. This is what doctors believe leads to memory and thinking problems related to Alzheimer’s.

Developed by Eli Lilly and Company, Kisunla slows down cognitive deterioration. While there are other drugs like it, this is the only FDA-approved drug that requires one visit per month to the doctor’s office.

“I will be able to enjoy my family and traveling and do things I wouldn’t be able to do without this,” Chung said.

Dr. Dan Gzesh, a neurologist at Abington Neurological Associates, called the drug a game-changer, saying it’s the first they can actually treat more than just a symptom.
