Conestoga High School students break the Guinness World Record for the highest egg drop, reaching 83 feet with a creative design.

The T/E Egg Drop Team at Conestoga High School recently set a Guinness World Record for the highest egg drop, writes Max Bennett for Patch.

Set by seniors Matthew Ma, Charlie Gawthrop, Jeffrey Wang, Valley Forge Middle Schooler Breckin Shefflerwood, and teacher Dr. Derrick Wood, the new record is 83 feet. It was achieved on Aug. 18 in West Chester, surpassing the previous record of 54.13 feet set in India in 2023.

Their design, refined through multiple trials, included a triangular device encasing the egg in foam and cardboard with a crumple zone made of straws to absorb impact.

The device also had a parachute made from a plastic bag and elastic string to ensure a soft landing. Guinness has strict design guidelines, meaning the team required creative solutions and meticulous planning.

Ma reflected on the journey, from a Science Olympiad project to an official record-breaking success, highlighting the team’s dedication.

“It was a lot of video evidence and paperwork to compile over the past few weeks, but it was definitely worth it,” said Wood. “Hopefully this record will be like our egg—unbroken—for quite some time!”
