Abington Friends School has named Mark Carberry the coach of its cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

Carberry boasts 15-plus years of experience coaching and recruiting at the collegiate and scholastic levels. Recently, his coaching at Villanova University resulted in an individual NCAA cross country champion and two Olympic athletes. In the past five years, Carberry has led Conestoga High School runners to several Top 10 finishes in the indoor and outdoor track and field state championships.

Carberry will join Jess Neushwander as co-coach of AFS’s varsity cross country team in the fall and will serve as head coach of the varsity indoor track and field team in the winter and varsity outdoor track and field team in the spring.

“I was drawn to AFS for the people and the subsequent community that’s embraced me,” said Carberry. “The student-athletes are goal-oriented, talented, and driven — attributes that are often hard to teach when absent. We’re confident in our team’s ability this year to put their best product on the line each and every race, with intentions of competing against the best in the FSL (Friends Schools League) and PAISAA (Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association). We’re excited for the greater AFS community to notice our results and hope to welcome more athletes to the AFS cross country and track and field program in the coming seasons.”

“From his first conversations with AFS students in the interview process to his daily interactions with them now as their coach, Mark has exhibited an emotional intelligence and attention to detail that resonates with our athletes and supports them in their development as both runners and young people,” said Jeff Bond, AFS’s Director of Athletics. “He brings a real sense of curiosity and entrepreneurship to our community; he is a student of running first and foremost, forever searching for just the right way to help athletes reach their potential. We can’t wait to cheer on Mark and the Roos this year on the cross country course and the track.”
