High-profile architectural firm Northworks recently helped a Gladwyne family redesign their colonial home to provide it with more functionality, writes Ashley Primis for the Philadelphia Magazine

At first, the couple believed they needed more space and were prepared for significant additions to their home. However, in drafting plans with Rachel Thompson of Northworks, they realized that they had plenty of room already, they just needed to reconfigure it.

Thompson’s team made sure the home was more functional, while the Northworks interiors principal, Amanda Faber, added striking contemporary focal points to the 1990s residence.

The firm created a new office in the home from a previously awkward space off the family room that was divided by a wall and fireplace. The space was previously used for storage. Thompson took down the wall and enveloped the entire space in maple bookshelves.

Meanwhile, by adding floor-to-ceiling maple to the fireplace, Thompson made it into an ideal transition between the adjacent office and family room. The owners now use the space around the fireplace to display the art from their collection.

Other changes included new white oak hardwood floors throughout the home and new custom metal-and-wood steps that replaced the outdated curved staircase near the entry.
