As malls decline across the U.S., the King of Prussia Mall continues to defy the trend, standing the nation’s most successful destinations.

As malls across America shutter their doors and fade into obscurity, the King of Prussia Mall continues to defy the trend, standing strong as one of the nation’s largest and most successful shopping destinations, writes James Wesser for PHL 17.

Since its opening in 1963 as a modest open-air plaza, the King of Prussia Mall has undergone a series of aggressive expansions and strategic upgrades, transforming it into a national retail giant.

The addition of The Court in 1981 and a comprehensive renovation in the 1990s repositioned the mall as a luxury shopping hub, attracting high-end retailers and solidifying its status on the national retail stage.

The mall’s most ambitious expansion came in 2016, when a 140,000-square-foot connector finally linked its two main buildings, adding 50 new stores and a state-of-the-art parking facility.

This move increased the mall’s footprint and revitalized its appeal in a challenging retail environment.

Today, the King of Prussia Mall covers nearly 2.3 million square feet, housing over 450 stores and 30 restaurants, and welcomes approximately 22 million visitors annually.
