Montgomery County Community College grad Katharine Boyle is off to Germany as part of a young professional exchange program, writes The Times Herald.
Boyle, who graduated with an associate degree in Bakery and Pastry Art is one of 74 Americans selected to take part in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. She and her fellow participants left for Germany late last month. The program will allow Boyle to study German baking and pastries while also taking in a new culture.
Boyle says her MCCC Baking and Pastry Assistant Professor Joseph Jacques was instrumental in getting her into the program.
“Professor Joe Jacques was the primary teacher for all my classes, and he even wrote a letter of recommendation for me. He’s been very helpful and supportive,” Boyle said.
Boyle’s love for baking began at a young age, making recipes from the internet. She even had her own online Christmas Cookie business. In high school, her first part-time job was in a bakery.
Abroad, Boyle will live with a host family and enroll in a language course. She will then study at a German university and participate in a baking and pastry internship.
The program also allows Boyle to serve as an ambassador of the US, showing Germans some of the best of what the country has to offer.
