Washington Post: Main Line Jewish Voters Relieved as Josh Shapiro Remains Focused on State Leadership
Some local Jewish voters are glad Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was turned down as the Democratic choice for vice president so he can stay on as governor, writes Nicole Markus for The Washington Post.
Shapiro is Jewish and grew up in Montgomery County, attending synagogue here.
Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris gave the vice president nominee slot to Tim Walz, the non-Jewish governor of Minnesota.
Harris picked Walz because he is from the Midwest and “will appeal to the whole country,” said Susan Neuman, 74, during breakfast at the Jewish deli Hymie’s in Merion Station.
If Shapiro had been picked, it could have hurt future chances to run for president.
“Losing vice-presidential candidates typically don’t go on to have careers as presidents,” said Jeff Stein, 56.
Ross M. Levy, director of youth engagement at Main Line Reform Temple in Wynnewood, whose kids played soccer with Shapiro’s kids, believes the governor will still play an important role making sure Pennsylvania voters turn out for Harris and Walz.
“I think Josh should keep doing what he’s been doing. He’s strong and exciting to both sides of the aisle in Pennsylvania, and we love that,” Levy said.
