16-Year-Old Haverford School Star Leads Ireland Lacrosse to Gold

Haverford School Lacrosse star Chris Burnetta led Ireland’s lacrosse team to the gold in U20 European Championship.

Chris Burnetta of the Haverford School leads Ireland’s lacrosse team to the gold in the U20 European Lacrosse Championship, writes Chris Goldberg for The Haverford School.

16-year-old Burnetta was the youngest on Ireland’s team, but that didn’t stop him from leading the team in scoring. He scored 15 goals and 10 assists over the seven-game tournament.

In the title match against defending champion England, Burnetta scored 2 goals with 2 assists and earned the all-tournament selection.

Children of nationals are eligible to play for their parent’s country which qualified American-born Burnetta whose mother was born in Ireland. The tournament was held late July in Wroclaw, Poland.

Of the experience, the soon-to-be sophomore said he felt comfortable playing with and against older players. “It was a fun challenge and I didn’t feel out of place on the field at all,” he said.

Burnetta learned of the tournament only months before when training with Performance Academy’s Todd MacFarlane who had experience with Scotland’s National Men’s Team.

MacFarlane spoke proudly of the player. “He works hard in and out of the classroom, is a multisport athlete, crushes grades and is just a solid individual.”
