Rodney and Tonya Daisey are the owners of Philly's Best Frozen Desserts in Louisville. Originally from the Philadelphia-area, they moved to Louisville in 2004, and opened a new water ice and ice cream because of a lack of water ice in the Kentucky city.

Rodney and Tonya Daisey, a couple with Philadelphia-area roots are the owners of Philly’s Best Frozen Desserts, a water ice and ice cream shop they operate out of Louisville, Kentucky.

Since starting the business in 2018, they have worked their way up from renting space from a kitchen incubator project, to a store, a special events truck, and concessions in the city’s four stadiums and arenas, writes Rita Giordano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Every time we get East Coast folks to come out here, they walk in the door very apprehensive,” Rodney Daisey said. “‘I know what it’s called,’ they say, ‘but is this the real deal?’ I say, ‘I’m not going to sit there, trying to convince you. Taste it for yourself.’

“We always get a thumbs up,” he added.

The shop has about 20 changing flavors. Its entire rear wall features references to Philadelphia, including Reading Terminal Market, LOVE Park, TastyKake, the Eagles, 76ers, Temple, Rocky, SEPTA, and more.

Water ice has become a sweet discovery for the locals and an unexpected delight for East Coasters who stumble upon the shop.

The reason the Daiseys launched the shop was simple.

“Every once and again, you get this urge of wanting some water ice, and of course we couldn’t find it,” Rodney said.
