Penn State is planning a $700 million renovation of its football stadium, but some trustees and alumni are questioning the plan.

Pennsylvania State University’s board approved a $700 million renovation of its football stadium this spring, but not everybody is happy about the massive debt-funded project, writes Melissa Korn for The Wall Street Journal.

Supporters of the renovation believe it is a needed change to keep the Nittany Lions, who are a point of pride for many, competitive in a period of college football revenue growth.

But some trustees and alumni are questioning the makeover plan for the Beaver Stadium, and the son of legendary Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno is among them. They think that the school’s rosy financial forecasts for the project are not realistic and also point to the new rules allowing player endorsement deals and revenue-share payments and the still uncertain impact this will have.

Some trustees also believe that the timing of the project is not good as the university is currently attempting to climb out of a deficit.

“There has to be some responsible adult in the room who says we just can’t afford to do this,” said Anthony Lubrano, a Penn State Trustee who voted against the renovation proposal in May.
