IKEA, with its American headquarters in Conshohocken, is opening a Fifth Avenue store at West 46th Street in New York, writes Christopher Bonanos for Curbed.
The 80,000 square-foot ground floor retail space is part of a new tower that will rise to replace some prewar buildings in the so-called Tiffany’s district.
The Dutch-holding company Ingka, responsible for most of IKEA’s franchise stores, will own a third of the tower plus the IKEA retail space, with New York developer Extell owning the rest, according to Bloomberg News.
The tower is expected to open in 2028.
This is a smaller IKEA store for shoppers at 80,000 square feet in a city where few drive. By comparison, stores in Red Hook and Elizabeth are more than 350,000 square feet.
The store aims to attract those customers who buy everyday products, as opposed to those buying larger furniture or furniture sets.
IKEA has tried several smaller stores in New York that have all since closed. A mini-IKEA opened in 1995, a small store opened in 2019, and a third store in Rego Park also came and went.
