Freeline Therapeutics, a London-based biotechnology company, has acquired SwanBio, a gene therapy firm based in Bala Cynwyd.

Freeline Therapeutics, a London-based biotechnology company, has acquired SwanBio, a gene therapy firm based in Bala Cynwyd, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The newly formed entity will operate under the name Spur Therapeutics. The financial details of the acquisition remain confidential.

The deal was facilitated by Syncona, the majority investor in both companies, which has committed an additional $50 million to support Spur’s expanded pipeline.

SwanBio, founded in 2017, has been developing gene therapies for inherited neurological conditions, including its lead candidate for adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN). This rare disease affects mobility and causes pain and incontinence. Before the acquisition, SwanBio had downsized its staff to focus on advancing its clinical program for AMN.

Spur Therapeutics will continue the development of FLT201, a gene therapy candidate for Gaucher disease, with late-stage testing scheduled for next year.

The company also plans to explore treatments for Parkinson’s disease and cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, early-stage clinical testing of SBT101 for AMN will continue, with a safety update expected in the first half of next year.
