After an arduous battle with cancer, Plymouth Township Patrol Sgt. Rocco Wack was overjoyed to take part in the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run with his entire family this weekend, reports CBS News Philadelphia.

On Sunday, he joined more than 30,000 runners who arrived from all over the globe to run the ten miles through the heart of Philadelphia.

Last year at this time, the 49-year-old was about to undergo a stem cell transplant following his second bout with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“It was a tough road,” said Wack. “I was pretty beat up by not knowing what the future may hold going forward, where I would be a year from then. I did not think this is where I’d be.”

His family was happy to join him for the run.

“Throughout the whole journey I’ve been by his bedside and I’d much rather be by his side on Broad Street,” said Wack’s wife.

One of Wack’s nurses also ran with him.

Wack and his family had plenty to celebrate: after he had a scan last week, the results came back clear.
