Montgomery County had its first black bear spotting for the season May 1, while another black bear (shown here) was spotted next door by Upper Makefield Police in Bucks County on April 29.

The first black bear sighting of the season in Montgomery County – and the second in the region – has been reported in Upper Moreland, writes Jo Ciavaglia for the Bucks County Courier Times.

Early on Wednesday morning, Upper Moreland police received a report of a possible bear sighting close to Farmstead Park.

“We are monitoring the area,” posted the Upper Moreland Police Department on its Facebook page. “We ask that residents in the surrounding neighborhoods check their security camera footage from late last night and early this morning for confirmation of the bear, and to use caution in the area.”

The park is located between Lurgan and Windy Hollow roads, around 15 miles from Street Road.

No further actions are being taken as of now.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission gets invited to remove a rogue bear when one wanders into an area where it either presents a potential traffic hazard or is causing damage and refuses to leave.

The bear is then captured using non-lethal traps and relocated to a more appropriate environment.
