Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown is turning 100 this year with the grand opening of a new welcome center and veterinary hospital, writes J.F. Pirro for the Main Line Today.

The zoo, established in 1924, has flourished under the leadership of CEO Al Zone since May 2012.

“It’s been a unique, creative time for us,” said Shaun Rogers, Elmwood’s marketing director.

“The animal hospital and welcome center are the first dominoes, but we’re also laying the foundation for the next 100 years. The master plan reworks the zoo like never before.”

The zoo was originally established in 1924 when a local farmer transferred 16 acres of land and a small menagerie to the borough. Today, Elmwood Park Zoo is owned and operated by Norristown Zoological Society, a nonprofit that aims to foster an appreciation for wildlife and inspire active participation in conservation.

Over the years, the zoo has managed to secure elite status with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation.

“There are 30,000 animal-collection establishments around the globe,” said Zone. “We’re one of only about 230 accredited by the AZA.”
