When Theresa and Joe Dowd decided to renovate their Ambler home two years ago, finding a dining table that fit into their unusually shaped room proved to be a challenge, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Theresa Dowd had her heart set on a white oak farmhouse-style table that would serve as the home’s centerpiece, but finding a ready-made one that was 14 feet by 38 inches proved to be impossible.

“I wanted a table with a French country feel that was simple but had a bit of casual elegance, charm, and character,” she said.

She also wanted the table to have a continuous top with no breaks or leaves, a fluted apron along the long sides of the table, and legs with understated detail.

She turned to Philadelphia Table Co., and in less than three months, they were able to turn her vision into a reality. The custom oak dining table cost around $7,900.

For the couple, there was added value in having something that had been personally handcrafted.

“I was able to customize exactly what I needed,” said Dowd. “It’s so beautiful.”
