Lower Merion Township is taking a significant step forward with its plans to enhance outdoor recreation and community connectivity, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for Main Line Times & Suburban.

A recent committee endorsement has paved the way for a $2.04 million contract with Driscoll Construction Company Inc., aimed at developing the Cynwyd Spur Trail Extension.

This project seeks to connect the Cynwyd Heritage Trail directly to Pencoyd Landing and the bridge to Manayunk.

Funded by $1 million in ARPA funds and an additional $200,000 in recreation funds, the extension is designed as a “bridge within a bridge.”

This innovative structure includes a tunnel that safely guides users beneath the Norfolk Southern rail line and the Schuylkill Expressway, linking them to the river trail and the revitalized Pencoyd Bridge to Manayunk
