After the Philadelphia Phillies announced that it was canceling its ‘Dollar Dog Nights,’ one South Philadelphia restaurant owner and chef took the reins to debut her own $1 hot dog promotion, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

Jennifer Zavala, owner of Juana Tamale in East Passyunk, is the hero in this ordeal.

Upon the start of the Phillies season, whenever a Phillies home game coincides with the hours of Juana Tamale, the restaurant will offer dollar dogs.

Juana Tamale is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM and 9 PM, and Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM.

“Everyone knows I’m a huge Philly sports fan,” Zavala told Foobooz. “My first year in South Philly, the Phillies won the World Series. I’d never in my life experienced anything remotely even like that. Plus, as a parent, the Dollar Dog night was a silly thing that made me feel like ‘one was catching a break.’”

When the promotion starts, all-beef hot dogs with classic toppings will cost $1. Special add-ons will be available for an up-charge, but details are still being sorted out.

Juana Tamale’s first ‘Dollar Dog Night’ will take place Thursday, March 28, which is the Phillies’ home opener.
