Retired University of Pennsylvania professor and former Bryn Mawr resident Jitendra Singh is selling a complete collection from a revered Japanese printmaker, writes Geraldine Fabrikant for The New York Times.

Singh was living in Bryn Mawr in 2013 when he bought his first woodblock print from the “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” collection by Katsushika Hokusai. He was enchanted by Hokusai’s view of the sacred Japanese mountain.

“I have a thing about mountains,” Singh tells The New York Times. “To me, Hokusai captured the essence of the mountain.”

Singh soon embarked on a quest to assemble the entire Thirty-Six Views collection, which, despite its title, consists of 46 images. One of the most iconic images in the collection includes Hakosuai’s most notable work, “Under the Well of the Great Wave Off Kanagawa [Great Wave]”.

He finally managed to complete his quest in January of last year.

Now, Singh is selling the entire set at Christie’s, a British art and luxury auction house. The collection is estimated to sell for between $3 million and $5 million.

There is an estimated amount of fewer than ten other collections which can be found in museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum, and the Bibliothèque Nationale of France.
