Steel River Playhouse (245 E. High Street) has a thought-provoking play to open the new year. The Cake opens Feb. 9 and runs for two weekends only. This delicious comedy tells the story of Della’s legendary North Carolina bakery.

Della is overjoyed when her best friend’s daughter returns from New York to get married and asks Della to make her wedding cake. Della, a sweet-natured Christian, is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs and her own marriage when she realizes there is not one bride, but two. Faith, family, and frosting collide in this timely new play by Bekah Brunstetter, writer for the NBC hit This Is Us. This show is directed by Leena Devlin and contains strong language and adult themes.

“I am so excited to bring this play to the Steel River audiences,” said Devlin. “This is such a sweet and funny play, all while challenging us to confront our own prejudices and biases and potentially even reevaluate our ideas of acceptance and inclusion.”

The Cake will run from Feb. 9-18, with performances at 7:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights and 2:00 PM on Sundays. In addition, there will be a relaxed performance at 2:00 PM on Saturday, Feb. 17. We invite individuals with ADD, ADHD, Dementia, Autism, sensory sensitivities, or any patron who would enjoy a performance where they can freely express themselves to join us.

The running time for this one-act show is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $29 for adults, $24 for seniors (65+), and $17 for students. Choose your seats and buy tickets online, or contact the Box Office at 610-970-1199. The opening-night sponsor is Deborah Stimson-Snow, and the 2023-2024 Season is proudly sponsored by Scott and Susan Bentley.
