Philadelphia-based Resources for Human Development is hoping to get approval from the Lower Providence Township for a “supportive short-term” facility to help the homeless in Montgomery County, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
In a recent meeting, township officials authorized the advertisement for a proposed text amendment to the zoning ordinance which makes the new facility possible.
Genny’s Place would provide “supportive short-term housing” for up to 60 individuals. The proposed site for it is the Eagleville Hospital property at 100 Eagleville Road.
Some Lower Providence residents are supportive of the project while others are strongly against it, citing crowding and safety issues.
“Supportive housing is in fact a legitimate land use that every township and borough and city must provide for. It is an important land use because of the human element, the human nature, the need for housing, the need to help people move forward in life,” said Marc Jonas, the attorney representing Resources for Human Development.
Genny’s Place would provide shelter in apartment-like settings and offer support services to help residents be able to live on their own in regular housing.
