Susan “Suzy” Troemel, a Philadelphia realtor, is using her experience with real estate to help people dealing with a housing crisis through Family Promise Montco, writes Jarmila Gorman for Points of Light.

Troemel was working as an elementary school teacher when funding was cut for her research-based literacy work during the pandemic. She decided to leave her job and start a new career as a realtor.

As somebody passionate about fair housing, Troemel is helping those who struggle to afford a place to live find subsidized housing and directs them to other available resources, such as low-cost lenders.

As part of her efforts, she started volunteering with Family Promise Montco, which serves families with children under 18 who are in imminent danger of losing their homes or have lost their homes suddenly.

“We provide families with emergency shelter for one month through associated faith-based organizations such as churches and synagogues,” said Troemel.

“The families also have access to Family Promise Day rooms with computers, offering a comfortable space where the families can spend their days. Family Promise Montco also runs a food pantry that serves otherwise underserved families in the community.”
