Cartesian Brewing is a grower-to-glass, producer-to-pint brewery in South Philly.

While there are several brewery trails outlining where and how to find locally-made beer, PA Eats has created a special list highlighting the breweries in Pennsylvania dedicated to using local malted grains and other brewing ingredients, writes Emily Kovach.

There are two main qualifications to make the list.

First, the breweries must have at least one individual brand available year-round that includes 75% or more PA grain/malt or a single year-round tap dedicated to beer containing 75% or more PA grain/malt.

Secondly, on a brewery level, each company must purchase more than 50,000 pounds of Pennsylvania grain/malt purchased annually, or 10% of total annual grain/malt consumption.

Philadelphia features three breweries that fit the bill.

Urban Village Brewing in Northern Liberties features locally-sourced beers, including its Double Dutch Bus Lager and Money Light Pilsner.

There’s also Brewery Techne in Fairmount, a 10-barrel brewhouse whose beer styles tend toward the experimental. Some of its bell-selling beers include bright citrus flavors like Mojo, a mojito-inspired witbier and a Lemon Meringue IPA.

In South Philadelphia, there’s Cartesian Brewing. Self-described as a “local origin brewery,” Cartesian specializes in grower-to-glass, producer-to-pint beers.

Its PA-focused beers include the House Golden Ale, the Tadge, and Harvest Fest 2023.
