While her tenure as vice president of the Norristown Municipal Council has come to an end, Heather Lewis is planning on continuing a life of service, writes Rachel Ravina for The Mercury.

After eight years on the council, the last two as vice president, she is now considering new ways she can make a difference in people’s lives.

Lewis, 50 years old, said she has been considering whether to run for higher office in the 17th senatorial district or to keep her focus on being a community organizer.

Community service has always been in her blood, coming from a strong “lineage of being a servant leader.”

Her grandmother was president of the local VFW and her father was a little league coach.

“They always were in the community giving back and helping and so…I meant it certainly wasn’t something that I thought about like I wanted, (I) just kind of gravitated toward (it),” she said.

During her tenure on the Norristown Council, she said some of the biggest issues have been the growing homelessness crisis, the development of the Norristown State Hospital, and the community opposition to demolishing the old Airy Street prison.

She said although there is more work to be done, that she is proud of the progress that the council has made.
