Montgomery County Board of Commissioners announced at a recent meeting that $5 million from the general unassigned fund balance will be used to build a new recreation center in Norristown, writes Rachel Ravina for Main Line Times & Suburban.

The money will act as a grant which means there is no timeline for spending the money. This grant is in addition to a previous $7 million for the Norristown Community Facilities Project.

Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairman Ken Lawrence Jr., said earlier in December. “One of Norristown’s current highest priorities is the development of a recreational center. Norristown provides great recreational resources, but the current facilities are outdated and subject to flooding. We want to help Norristown and their goal to bring a recreational facility for all that will be an asset to the entire community and region.”

Norristown’s current recreation center is located at 340 Harding Boulevard.

Montgomery County has spent more than $20 million in federal COVID-19 relief dollars on 16 projects related to affordable housing, childcare, community facilities, and assistance for local nonprofits.

In addition, $500,00 was awarded to 47 small businesses in Norristown.
