Despite Calamity That Befell It Last Year, This Kitty Cafe Stands as an Oasis for Cats, People

Treetops Kitty Cafe has been restored thanks to aid from the community and cat lovers.

Nearly a year after a devastating flood caused huge damage to its premises, Treetops Kitty Cafe in Kennett Square is still standing as a unique oasis for both cats and people, writes Ben Silver for Main Line Today

The nonprofit, which was founded in 2017, currently houses more than a dozen older cats and provides them with a more stable environment than the shelters they would otherwise inhabit.

Older cats are terrified after being abandoned and put “in a cage in a loud place that they’re just uncomfortable with,” said executive director Hannah April, the nonprofit’s only full-time employee. “I wanted to give them a soft place to land until they find their next forever home.”

That became impossible last December when a faulty water meter in a neighboring unit caused a flood that ruined the cafe’s floors, the lounge area, and six expensive cat trees.

The nonprofit quickly organized a fundraiser for renovations and the community responded by pitching in thousands of dollars to help. Almost a year later, the nonprofit has recouped most of its losses.
