Buchanan Ingersoll Chairman and CEO Joseph Dougherty discusses the acquisition of Ratner Prestia, a King of Prussia intellectual property law boutique.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney based in Philadelphia is acquiring RatnerPrestia, a King of Prussia intellectual property law boutique, writes Jeff Blumenthal for Philadelphia Business Journal.

RatnerPrestia is one of the Philadelphia region’s largest IP law boutiques with 22 lawyers and two patent agents. The acquisition will be effective January 1.

Most of RatnerPrestia’s employees will remain at its King of Prussia headquarters until the completion of the firm’s lease in two and a half years. At that point, they will move into Buchanan’s Philadelphia offices at Two Liberty Place.

RatnerPrestia’s offices in Wilmington and Washington, D.C. will also merge with Buchannan’s offices in those locations.

Buchanan Ingersoll Chairman and CEO Joseph Dougherty explained that growing its intellectual property group is part of its new five-year strategic plan. Although Buchanan already has 40 IP lawyers, none of them are in Philadelphia.

“This gives significantly more depth and experience to an already robust section within our firm,” he said.

“A perfect example is when we combine these two groups, they’ve filed nearly 3,000 patent applications in the last year.”

He added that RatnerPrestia will bring more domestic patent work into the firm.
