Kelsey Koelzer, the women’s ice hockey head coach at Division III Arcadia University in Glenside, is the first Black head coach in the history of NCAA hockey.

Recently, she joined KYW Newsradio’s 1-On-1 with Matt Leon to talk about her life in the game.

The Horsham native and Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate made a name for herself as a star player at Princeton University. That is where she got interested in coaching.

“I hadn’t really experienced a strong female coaching role model until college,” said Koelzer.

She started the program at Arcadia from scratch in late 2019. By the 2022-23 season, the team had already managed to achieve a winning record.

And this season is expected to be as good.

“It’s been an exciting year so far, with the students coming back late August and we had the opportunity with the new NCAA rule to actually utilize some days in the month of September to practice,” said Koelzer.

“We’ve gotten the opportunity to hit the ice with the team a little bit.”

Now, the team is on the ice six days a week and will continue with their intensive workouts until mid-December.
