Narberth native and former Union Academy member Jason Aoyama is set to play his final season with the Midshipmen in the annual Army-Navy Cup at Subaru Park, Chester.

This will be his fourth time participating in this yearly soccer rivalry, which has been held since 2012.

Subaru Park, only a 25-minute drive from his childhood home, is a familiar ground where he and his three soccer-playing brothers often played against each other.

Aoyama’s soccer journey was shaped by his time with the Union Academy during high school and a period with FC Delco, another top local club, before committing to the Naval Academy.

He’s the first in his family to join the military, a decision influenced by his teammate JD Wagner, who also committed to the Navy. This season, Aoyama has scored two goals and one assist in 11 games and is one of four players from the Philadelphia area on Navy’s roster.

This season holds sentimental value for Aoyama as he plays one last time before friends and family, before embarking on his next chapter as a nuclear surface warfare operator.

Read more about this Narberth native and his journey from the soccer field to the Navy in The Philadelphia Inquirer.
