The list of the New York Times’ best Philadelphia restaurants ranges from outstanding pizza to French-inflected cuisine to fiery Ethiopian dishes and so much more.

Among the eateries making the cut is El Chingon. This Mexican restaurant is run by Juan Carlos Aparicio, who takes us home to the Pueblan kitchen with his delicious creations where his mother taught him to cook. She is the one who inspired many dishes on the menu, including cemitas made with springy bread.

Also on the list is Gabriella’s Vietnam, where the presentation of the food is as thrilling as the flavors. Highlights include bánh bột lọc and a catfish hot pot.

Meanwhile, Illata, a Modern American restaurant, hosts a dinner party five nights a week that nobody should miss. Just make sure to bring your own wine.
