While both the Schuylkill River Trail and Delaware River Trail are not continuous, there are currently plans to connect the gaps, with some projects already underway, writes Asha Prihar for Billy Penn at WHYY.

The plans are connected to larger efforts to create a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly infrastructure in the region and wider.

This includes the Circuit Trails, a regional plan to make an 800-mile trail network by 2040, and the East Coast Greenway, which aims to connect Maine and Florida with a 3,000-mile trail route.

Plans for the Schuylkill River Trail currently include a bridge over the Schuylkill for pedestrians and cyclists that will connect the Grays Ferry Crescent and Bartram’s Mile parts of the trail.

The bridge is under construction and is expected to open in late spring 2024.

A trail segment between Christian Street and the Grays Ferry Crescent is also under construction.

As for the Delaware River Trail, a new trailhead park – Robert A. Borski Jr. Park – will be added at the northern end of the Port Richmond Trail.

Meanwhile, a PennDOT road project in Bridesburg will include a sidepath to connect the soon-to-be-built Borski Park and the Frankford Boat Launch.
