In 2022, remote work was interestingly most common in neighborhoods close to the office, but that trend could be changing more recently.

In 2022, remote work was interestingly still most common in neighborhoods close to the office, including in Philadelphia, writes Justin Fox for Bloomberg.

According to the Census Bureau’s Public Use Microdata Area data, last year, Philadelphia ranked among the top 50 work-from-home areas in the country, with 34.9 percent of employed residents working primarily from home.

The percentage of employed residents who worked primarily from home in the entire Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro area was 23.6 percent.

One of the reasons for the high percentage in Philadelphia is the fact that the shift to remote work during the pandemic was mostly concentrated in places that already had lots of people who could do their jobs remotely. This is primarily well-educated white-collar workers who live in the biggest metropolitan areas.

For example, Philadelphia ranked among the top 25 areas in the country with a high percentage of residents 25 or older with a bachelor’s degree or higher. The city landed at No. 23 with a percentage of 77.8.
