Winery in Chadds Ford Looks to Create Events Barn, But Neighbors Are Balking
Penns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford wants to replace a barn with an events building, but neighbors are already complaining about noise and traffic at the vineyard and tasting room, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.
The winery wants a special exemption from Concord Township from R-2D residential zoning to replace a 1,400-square-foot dilapidated wooden barn with a 2,500-square-foot building and covered deck for events and wine tastings.
Gino Razzi co-owns the winery with his daughter Carley. It operated as Smithbridge Winery in the 1970s. Penns Woods opened in 2001.
Razzi owns the front 5 acres where the barn and house sit, along with two other vineyards in Chester County.
Thirty acres of the vineyard are now part of the First State National Historical Park.
The winemaking operation is offsite in Eddystone.
Razzi said he has been a good neighbor.
“We are trying to give the community what they can be proud of,” said Razzi, a Vietnam veteran who came to the United States from Italy in 1962.
Razzi said the structure would be on the far side to reduce disturbing neighbors and would be built into the hill with sound management to reduce noise.
