Philadelphia native Kristen Welker made her debut as the new moderator of Meet the Press, NBC’s flagship politics show, on Sunday, writes Rob Tornoe and Nick Vadala for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

During her debut, the show aired a pre-taped interview between Welker and former President Donald Trump, which was his first appearance on NBC in over four years as well as his first broadcast TV interview since leaving the White House.

Walker, who grew up in Fairmount and is a Germantown Friends School graduate,  previously covered the White House for NBC for twelve years.

She reported on three administrations and received rave reviews for her part in moderating a 2020 presidential debate between Trump and President Joe Biden.

During a send-off for Chuck Todd, Welker offered a peek into her approach as moderator.

“I want to approach this as a reporter,” she said. “That’s who I am, that’s who I’ve always been. I’ve traveled all over the world with all of these presidents, and I really want to bring that to the show every Sunday to make sure that we are giving our viewers the information that they need.”
