Mr. Frieder and his wife, Carol, married in 1957, and he bought her flowers nearly every Friday for the rest of their lives.

Samuel L. Frieder, of Lafayette Hill, a retired CEO and president of S. Frieder and Sons cigar manufacturers and former co-president and chairman of the board of trustees at Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia, passed away on June 28 at 86, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Frieder was also a lifetime trustee of Einstein Healthcare Network and former chairman of the board at Einstein Medical Center, as well as an ardent community advocate.

Frieder’s grandfather founded S. Frieder and Sons in the early 1900s in New York City. Frieder rose from a sales position in the 1950s to executive leadership by the next decade.

As part of his social activism, he helped the Association for Jewish Children and Jewish Family Service come together in 1983 to become a single organization, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia.

“He was a man of great patience, wisdom, and empathy,” said his son Stephen. “The commitment to serving others and always doing the right thing without any need for acknowledgment was at the core of what Dad was about.”
