New PHS Green Resource Center in Norristown Helps Fight Hunger

Despite its wealth, Montgomery County is not immune to food insecurity, which is something a new program is hoping to help alleviate, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“I think a lot of times, people think of Montgomery County as a well-off county in Pennsylvania, but unfortunately you know, there’s a large percentage of the population that is experiencing food insecurity,” said Justin Trezza, Program Director for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Community Gardens program.

PHS has partnered with Montgomery County to develop an initiative that would help feed residents in need. To achieve this, three acres of Norristown Farm Park were dedicated to establishing the PHS Green Resource Center.

The center grows and ships food to various organizations throughout the area. It is currently in its second year, and Trezza is expecting big numbers.

“Last year, we produced and distributed about 8,000 pounds of produce to the community,” he said.

Food recipients include the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s “Food as Medicine” program. At the Karabots-Norristown Primary Care Center, the produce is used for workshops that focus on food literacy.
