The Montgomery County Urban Search and Rescue Team recently demonstrated to drivers what to do during floods, writes Kim Hudson for CBS Philadelphia.

The first step, according to Task Force Leader Joseph Dishler, is for victims to call 911 as soon as they leave their cars.

Most response times can be up to 12 minutes. While awaiting help, drivers must open their windows, take off their seatbelts and climb onto their roof. Rescue specialists also recommend remaining calm when rescue services arrive.

First responders will provide personal protection equipment, flotation devices, and life jackets.

“You are going to lay on your back,” Dishler tells CBS Philadelphia. “Put your head tilted toward the shore that you’re going, the feet farther away, and the natural currents are going to ferry you to that side.”

However, the best thing people can do is to avoid flooded waters altogether.
